A number of modern trains manufactured by Alstom, such as double-decker X40 and X60 commuter trains, are in use in Sweden. SJ, wholly owned by the Swedish state, operates these trains.

Svensk Konstruktionstjänst has designed a number of solutions for these trains. Here are some of them.

IMPROVED ENVIRONMENT IN THE TRAIN CAB

Train drivers experienced difficulties with controlling the climate by regulating airflow in the cabs of the X40 trains, resulting in problems with drafts and uneven temperatures. They also needed improvement of the sound environment.

The assignment included everything from design, manufacturing documentation, purchasing, production and documentation. To solve the problems we replaced existing air ducts, supply air diffusers and exhaust units with new micro perforated sheets. The plates, with their particular technology, improved sound environment in the cab significantly and created a large diffuse exhaust unit that avoids drafts and improve the driver environment.

Alstom received 70 deliveries of the new cab interiors.

WASTE & FRESHWATER BOXES

The hatches to the fresh and waste water tank connections on the X40 risked being damaged during the winter. This could occur due to icing that prevented proper closing of the door, resulting in no possibility to discharge waste. To solve this, we designed new temperate boxes, which prevented the buildup of snow and ice as the doors were closing. Furthermore we constructed shields to prevent damage to hoses and pipes caused by snow and ice build-up under the train. The project covered everything from design to procurement, manufacturing and the delivery of 70 kits.

-The project was technically challenging since the demands were high and the final product needed to withstand harsh outdoor environment for rail traffic, says project manager Jacob Jensen.

Hoisting device and transport cradle

The commuter train X60 needed a hoisting device for removal and fitting of a coupler device. The assignment included everything from feasibility study to design and delivery of the product. The delivery also included risk analysis, lifting test, CE marking and documentation of the hoisting device.

For handling the coupler device six transport cradles were constructed. The transport cradles were designed so that the coupling can be split at the middle flange joint.
