RESEARCH BASED PRODUCT

MIPS began as a collaboration between Peter Halldin 1995, researcher in biomechanics at The Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (KTH) and Hans Von Holst, neurosurgical researcher at the Karolinska Institute. Research in the 90s by neurosurgeons showed that the helmets on the market did not provide adequate protection for the brain. These were tested by being dropped straight down into the ground and this type of fall is not very common in bicycle accidents. Also, it’s not the impact itself, but the strain of the brain that is most harmful. Halldin, who studied the consequences of impact and collision, developed together with von Holst the Multi directional Impact Protection System, MIPS. Halldin and four other researchers in biomechanics founded the company MIPS in 2001.

THE FIRST VERSION

Svensk Konstruktionstjänst designed the first version of the helmet with MIPS technology integrated, where the shell was separated from the lining of the sliding layer. The project included choosing materials, injection molding, hanging layer and deployment.

Today there MIPS technology in over 190 helmet models that are being sold worldwide.

“It was a challenge to injection molding something as thin and large, and that the suspension had to move in relation to the helmet in a certain way.”
